Filing taxes with a non-resident spouse?

I am in the process of completing my taxes, but am unsure how to go about filing since my husband is an American citizen and a non-resident of Canada. We have already been told that my husband cannot file income taxes in Canada, because he only has status as a visitor and does not have a Social Insurance Number. The issue is how to file because of the Universal Tax Credit being based on the spouse with the lowest income. My husband has no income from Canada or the United States. I planned to file my taxes electronically on the computer, but the software will not let me because of my husband not having a SIN. One person has told us that I have to file everything on paper because of the S2 form that has to be filled out declaring his global income. We have also been told that there should still be a way to do it online. If anyone could provide any insight or clarification on the easiest way to do this, it would be greatly appreciated.

You will not be able to file online.

Complete a paper return, keeping in mind that you must declare your husbands world net income (converted to Canadian dollars) on your tax return. If he has no income, enter $0.00.

Be aware that CRA will question you about a husband that has a family in Canada and doesn't support them.
